Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 25, 2026
Summarize ("the Extension") is a Chrome extension that generates AI-powered summaries of web pages. Your privacy matters to us. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and what we don't do.
What Data We Collect
When you click "Summarize," the Extension extracts the text content of the current web page and sends it to our server to generate a summary. Specifically, the following data is transmitted:
- Page text — the article content extracted from the page you are viewing
- Page title and URL — used to provide context for the summary
- Your IP address — used for rate limiting and anonymous usage analytics (see below)
- Error reports — if the Extension encounters an unexpected error, a report containing the error message and browser version is automatically sent to help us fix bugs. These reports never include page content, URLs, or browsing history
If you upgrade to Pro, the following additional data is collected during checkout through Stripe:
- Email address — provided by Stripe after you complete payment. Stored on our server alongside your license key for subscription management purposes only
- Stripe customer and subscription IDs — used to manage your subscription and process cancellations. We do not store your payment card details — those are handled entirely by Stripe
How We Use Your Data
- Page content is sent to the Anthropic Claude API to generate your summary. It is not logged, stored, or retained on our server after the response is returned
- Your IP address is used to enforce rate limits and to maintain aggregated, anonymous usage counters (e.g. request counts per IP per day). These counters automatically expire after 30 days. IP addresses are not used for advertising, profiling, or shared with third parties
- We collect aggregated, anonymous usage metrics (e.g. request counts), and API token usage. These metrics contain no personal information and are used solely to monitor service health and manage operating costs
What We Don't Do
- We do not create user accounts or profiles — Pro licenses are tied to a Stripe subscription, not a user account
- We do not track your browsing history or activity
- We do not use cookies or advertising trackers
- We do not sell, share, or transfer your data to third parties for advertising or marketing purposes
- We do not store page content or summaries on our servers
Local Storage
Summaries you generate are saved locally in your browser using Chrome's built-in storage (chrome.storage.local). This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to copy it. You can delete individual summaries or all saved data at any time from within the Extension.
Third-Party Services
We use the following third-party services to operate the Extension:
- Anthropic (Claude API) — processes page content to generate summaries
Anthropic Privacy Policy - Stripe — processes payments for Pro subscriptions. Stripe collects your payment information directly — we never see or store your card details. Stripe provides us with your email address and subscription identifiers after checkout
Stripe Privacy Policy - Upstash Redis — stores rate-limiting counters, aggregated usage metrics, and Pro license records (email, Stripe IDs). IP-based counters expire after 30 days. License records are retained for the duration of the subscription
- Sentry — receives error reports when something goes wrong, to help us identify and fix bugs. Error reports may include the error message, stack trace, and browser version. They do not include page content or browsing history
Sentry Privacy Policy - Vercel — hosts our API
Vercel Privacy Policy
Data Retention
- Page content is processed in real time and is not retained after the summary is returned
- Rate-limiting counters expire automatically after 24 hours (paid) or 90 days (free)
- Aggregated usage metrics and IP-based request counters expire automatically after 30 days
- Pro license records (email, Stripe IDs) are retained for the duration of the subscription and deleted when the subscription is cancelled
- Error reports in Sentry are retained according to Sentry's default retention policy (90 days)
- Locally stored summaries persist until you delete them
Permissions
The Extension requests the following Chrome permissions:
- activeTab — to read the content of the page you are currently viewing when you click Summarize
- scripting — to inject the content extraction script into the active tab
- storage — to save your summaries and preferences locally
- sidePanel — to optionally display the Extension in Chrome's side panel
- notifications — to notify you when a summary is ready (if the popup is closed)
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the Extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
